Padre e hijo, ambos inventores. Robert emigró a EE.UU. en 1803. En la ciudad de Nueva York cofundó una empresa de equipos de impresión y en 1827 introdujo el marco de hierro fundido que pronto reemplazó a los marcos de madera usados hasta entonces en las prensas de impresión. Su versión mejorada de la prensa cilíndrica de
impresión de Napier reemplazó todas las prensas de fabricación inglesa en EE.UU. Richard ingresó a la compañía en 1827 y llegó a ser su jefe al morir su padre. Reemplazó la prensa plana con la primera prensa rotativa que tuvo éxito (patentada en 1847). Siguió esta innovación con la prensa rotativa con bobina de papel (1865) y la prensa con bobina de papel perfeccionada (impresión simultánea de ambas caras) (1871), mejoramientos revolucionarios que hicieron posible los diarios de gran circulación.
